Greetings
Dear Friends and Brothers,

The summer is upon us, and so is the midsummer feast of the Corsairs: Saturday the 19th, at 5 pm in the Limerick House. We will meet, as usual, in the upstairs room. It is important that everyone be present when the ceremony begins, so please be punctual! The event is open to Masons and non-Masons alike. Men, women, brethren of any jurisdiction or obedience are all welcome to attend. There is no cost for this event besides the food and drink that you order. The only requirement: an interest in the Craft. So feel free to bring your friends and loved ones to this ceremonial festive board in which we will discuss Freedom and Free Will and enjoy food and drink in the presence of friends and brothers.

Fraternally,
Bro. Alessandro Gagliardi

Lecture

At our next meeting Br Vincenzo Sainato from Washington 21 will present a lecture on free will.

One core requirement for candidacy of Freemasonry is to be a man, well recommended, who is acting of his own free will and accord. That said, what is meant by 'free will' (versus freedom) has evolved and then devolved and evolved again over the last 200 or so years.

Since the time of The Enlightenment the concept and meaning of 'free will' has gone through varying interpretations and acceptances within societies. From the 'pure' rationality of the Enlightenment to it's intellectual counterfactual, 'hard' and 'soft' Positivism, and the more modern understanding of rational choice being 'bounded' or delimited- outside of our control.

The purpose of this lecture will be to discuss the historical development and understanding of 'free will' as an explanation for human behaviors; moreover, to illustrate the commonalities between these very different interpretations and what it means in our everyday lives..

The lecture will be presented by Br Vincenzo Sainato from Washington 21. Br Sainato is a Doctoral Candidate in Criminology at John Jay College and has been teaching courses and researching the use of rational choice models for crime prevention for last 4 years.

Situated 1½ blocks north of the Franklin Avenue IRT Station (#2 #3, #4, and #5 trains) and the Franklin Avenue shuttle (Botanic Gardens Station), 95 South is located at 778 Franklin Avenue between St. John's and Lincoln Places.

The venue has a cozy, homey ambience with bare brick walls and soft lights, a well-stocked bar (for those to whom that will matter), and The Bey's Divan where we can hold court. For those who haven't joined us before, I'll be easy to spot - just look for the Panama hat and Cuban cigar.

If you're lucky, the backyard will be open and the barrel grills will be smokin'. Don't be dismayed if it's not; the kitchen is just as serious a bit of business, and the barbecue chicken is becoming famous. My personal recommendations are the seafood - sautéed and grilled catfish, salmon, and shrimp - and the veggies (I liked the candied yams and stringbeans best, you'll discover your own faves!)

As always, the Meet-n-Greet is open to all affiliations and people with an interest in meeting Masons and Sisters of the Order of the Eastern Star, and guests who have an interest in the Fraternity and Order with an eye toward prospective candidacy. Contact Br.·. Rashied for driving directions, and come break bread with New York's Fraternal Finest!

Your Co-Host,

.·. Rashied ~

Greetings
? Dear Friends and Brethren Corsairs,

Our works which have for some time been suspended are again in full vigor. This Saturday, at 5 pm, the Corsairs Club will set sail for the palace of memory, piloted by our own secretary, Bro. Bill Gibbons. And you are cordially and fraternally invited to join us in our traditional ceremonial festive board and discussion. At our last meeting, in January, brethren from all over the United States came and broke bread together and shared in the fraternity and light offered by such a diverse assemblage of fellows. Our meeting this season similarly promises to be nourishing of the mind, refreshing of the heart, and joyful of the spirit. So join us in the upstairs room of the Limerick House where we will commence our voyage in search of further light.

Warm Fraternal Regards,
Bro. Alessandro Gagliardi
. Lecture

At our next meeting Bro. Bill Gibbons will present a lecture on the Art of Memory.

The art of memory was developed in ancient times to help orators remember their speeches. They imagined placing images representing ideas in a building. Because images and places are more easily remembered than abstract ideas, the method helped speakers recollect their material. In the Middle Ages, the art of memory was transformed from a success technique into a devotional exercise. It was used to remember Heaven and Hell, the virtues and the vices. The content became as important as the method itself. In the Renaissance memory systems proliferated and the goal became the creation of a memory structure that contained all of human knowledge in an order that reflected that of the universe.

This is the context in which we should understand Schaw's order that the masons under his jurisdiction in Scotland be tested in the "art of memorie". And if we turn to the teaching of Freemasonry and examine them in light of the art of memory we will see some very suggestive parallels. Masonic teaching is organized into a three story building, and in various places in the building we find symbols which bring to mind various aspects of Masonic philosophy. Masons spend a lot of time memorizing, and the structure of the material to be learned by heart is just what a practitioner of the art of memory would recommend.

This lecture, based on "The Art of Memory" by Frances Yates, will trace the development of the art of memory from ancient times through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and will make clear the nature of that "spiritual building, that house not made with hands" the building of which is such an important part of our work as Masons.
